ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

Lviv Polytechnic National University (LPNU) is one of the oldest and most respected technical universities in Eastern Europe, founded in 1816. It is a multidisciplinary institution known for its strengths in engineering, information technology, natural sciences, and environmental research. The university comprises 17 academic institutes and educates over 25,000 students, supported by a faculty of more than 2,000 academic staff. LPNU has a longstanding history of experience in international cooperation, applied research, and policy advising.

As a national leader in the field of green and digital innovation, LPNU is actively involved in projects focused on sustainability, smart specialisation, and regional development. It serves as a hub for innovation and entrepreneurial activity in Western Ukraine, cooperating closely with local authorities, SMEs, and academic networks.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT

LPNU serves as the coordinator of the AGRI-BIOCIRCULAR-HUB project, a Horizon Europe initiative aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture and circular bioeconomy in Widening countries, including Poland, Latvia, and Ukraine. 

Responsibilities of the LPNU team encompass: 

  • General communication and overall management and coordination of project activities, financial management of the project, reporting to the REA;
  • Mapping and analysis of the S3 strategies existing in the agrifood and bio-circular economy of Ukraine;
  • Analysis of the state-of-the-art in agrifood and bio-circular economy of Ukraine;
  • Development of long-term R&I action plan and roadmap for Ukrainian agrifood and bio-circular economy to foster cross-border and interregional cooperation in sustainable and biocircular agriculture, with special focus on an emerging innovation ecosystem;
  • Coordinating the development of a regional R&I pilot #4 in Ukraine, aimed at upscaling (from TRL 3 to TRL5) and optimizing industrial processes for valorisation of municipal organic waste for production of sustainable energy/biofuel, organic fertilizers and different soil growth substrates optimized for different type of typical Ukrainian crops – cereals (wheat, oats, barley), soybeans, rapeseed and sunflower;
  • Participation in capacity building in the Ukrainian ecosystem, including delivering training, networking activities, and tailored mentoring modules to enhance innovation and entrepreneurship diffusion, particularly targeting the needs of the emerging ecosystem in Ukraine;
  • Participation in a cascade funding scheme to support 4 Ukrainian SMEs engaged in the development and adoption of smart and circular technologies and innovations towards sustainable agriculture;
  • Coordination of WP7 “Mentoring of an emerging-place based ecosystem (Ukraine): Mentoring programmes”. 
  • Entrepreneurship support: implementing an open innovation and entrepreneurship mentoring programme to bring innovations directly to farmers and promote sustainable practices;
  • Coordination of WP8 “Dissemination, exploitation, communication”;
  • Dissemination activities to ensure effective outreach and engagement with stakeholders across academia, industry, government, and civil society (managing the project’s online presence, organising events, and facilitating knowledge exchange to promote the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices).
