Institute of Agriculture of Carpathian Region of National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine (IACR)

ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

IACR is a leading research institution focused on agricultural studies in the Carpathian region. The institute conducts research in crop cultivation, breeding, plant protection, feed production, and animal husbandry. It manages 950 hectares of land, with 200 hectares allocated for research.

ROLE IN THE PROJECT

The primary focus of IACR’s participation in the project is to ensure the success of Pilot #4 by conducting robust field trials, validating results, and actively participating in the development of place-based ecosystems through Ecosystem Building and Mentoring Programs. Through these contributions, IACR aims to advance the valorization of municipal organic waste and its integration into sustainable agricultural systems, enhancing both productivity and environmental sustainability in Ukraine.

KEY STRENGTHS

The Institute of Agriculture of the Carpathian Region has a long-standing record of scientific and practical contributions to agriculture in Western Ukraine. Among our most notable achievements:

  • Development of over 50 crop varieties adapted to the Carpathian region, including winter wheat, barley, oat, flax, mustard, and perennial forage grasses.
  • Implementation of sustainable farming systems on sloped and erosion-prone lands, helping to preserve soil fertility and reduce environmental degradation under changing climate conditions.
  • Establishment of a certified agrochemical laboratory, capable of conducting over 170 types of analyses. The lab provides essential support for seed certification, soil testing, and feed quality assessment for farmers and researchers.
  • Production and dissemination of high-quality pre-basic and basic seeds, ensuring access to clean, regionally adapted planting material for farms of all sizes.
  • Introduction of innovative livestock feeding technologies, which have improved animal health, feed efficiency, and the quality of milk and meat products in local dairy and mixed farms.
  • Strong partnerships with smallholder farms are supported through annual Field Days, demonstration trials, training sessions, and joint pilot projects.
  • Scientific leadership at the national level, including the coordination of NAAS Thematic Research Program No. 9 (2021–2025) focused on sustainable development of the Carpathian region.
