Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics (AREI)
ABOUT THE ORGANISATION
Institute of Agricultural Resources and Economics (AREI) is a leading institute for research on crop breeding and rural economics, with a history of more than 100 years. AREI scientists have focused on crop breeding, research on various crop management technologies, carried out studies on crop quality, as well as development of sustainable rural areas. Besides, AREI has provided economic analysis for the agricultural, food production and fisheries sectors. AREI activities have been performed in four locations in Latvia which makes it possible to organise research in various environments.
During the CIRCLE project AREI has contributed in the mapping of practices embedded in circular economy schemes throughout case studies where agricultural, forestry and aquaculture sectors were involved in the Baltic-Nordic region. Policy briefs dedicated to multiple stakeholder targets and scientific publications have supported the related results.
Besides, AREI was involved in promoting research that valorizes biobased residues or waste for agricultural use: explorating agricultural residue to produce biochar, prototyping L filter for recovering phosphorus from wastewater and assessing its technological and economic use of the P-based product in agriculture (FiltrL project funded by Latvia Environmental Protection Fund/ Environmental Regional Development Agency of Latvia).
ROLE IN THE PROJECT
AREI leads Work Packages 2 and 9, coordinating strategic mapping, innovation capacity development, and circular economy assessment across the partner countries. The institute also plays a central role in integrating regional research into project pilots and monitoring the economic impact of bio-based innovations.
